1. I like to be a member of the club. How should I proceed?
First, do your Class 2 medical at one of the authorised DCA doctors. Then drop by the club with 12 passport size photos, photocopy of passport, joining & subscription fees, sign the club’s indemnity and agreement forms and apply for a Student Pilot Licence (SPL). The SPL will take about 2 months to be processed and approved. Once approved, you can start flight training.

2. What is required to get a PPL?
One must fly the minimum stipulated 40 flight hours as per the flying syllabus and pass 6 ground tests within 9 months from the issue of the SPL before the Flight Test.

3. When and where do you conduct the ground school?
During the wait for the SPL to be approved, one can attend the 2-days ground school which is conducted on the first Tuesdays and Wednesdays of each month. It is conducted at the club’s classroom and attendance is compulsory before flight training can commence.
A 4-days pre-DCA exam preparatory class is also conducted in the week that a DCA exam is to be conducted at the club. This exam is done once every 2 months subject to availability of the DCA examiner and the size of the class.

4. How long is my PPL valid?
The licence is based on the validity of your medical. If your age is below 40, the licence is valid for 24 months and if are aged 40 and above, the licence is valid for 12 months. One must also do a Certificate of Test once every 13 months.

5. I am 50 years old. Can I learn to fly?
The minimum age to get a PPL is 17 years of age. Do your Class 2 medical and the doctor will be able to advise you accordingly.

6. If I wear spectacles, can I learn to fly?
Yes, as long as you wear correction glasses (or lenses). When you do your Class 2 medical, the doctor will be able to advise you accordingly.

7. What is the total cost to get a PPL (A) / PPL (H)?
The approximate total cost including 40 flight hours, joining & annual subscription fees, medical, ground school, books, examinations, licence applications, pilot equipment for a PPL (A) and PPL (H) is RM29,000 and RM80,000 respectively.

8. Do I have to pay the total amount when I join the club?
No, you don’t have to. An account will be created and payments will be progressive – 1st payment when you join the club, 2nd when you commence ground school and 3rd onwards when you start flight training. For flight training, you will be required to top-up for 5 hours worth of flying and it will be deducted as you fly. If it reaches 1 hour or less (but not a negative account of more than RM900), you will be advised to top-up before flying can continue.

9. Is your club an approved organisation that can conduct flight training?
DCA stipulates the following:
First, the Club must have a Certificate from the Society of Clubs to operate as a Club for flying. This allows the club to conduct flying for its PPL members.
Second, the Club must have a Certificate of Approval from DCA to conduct flight training. FRAS Flying Club has both these certificates.

10. Are you instructors full-time or part-time?
FRAS Flying Club has both full-time and part-time instructors. Our instructors have between them over 80 years of flying experiences in flying Aeroplanes and Helicopters.

11. I hold a foreign PPL. What do I need to convert it to a Malaysian PPL?
First, you need the documents as per paragraph 1. Produce photocopy of foreign PPL, logbook entries and other supporting documents. Do a flight assessment with the club instructor who will recommend a suitable conversion program (normally about 5-10 hours). Pass the Airlaw and HPL papers and do a Check Flight test with a DCA Authorised Examiner.

12. Due to my work schedule, I am not able to fly regularly as I want to? Are there any rules?
The Club rules stipulates that if a PPL holder has not flown for more than 60 days, he/she would need to fly with a Flight Instructor before flying solo. Other rules include no diving activities 12 hours before flight and no alcoholic consumption 8 hours before flight.
